The terms northbridge and southbridge are semi-arbitrary names for two microprocessor support chips. These names were selected because of the common practice of drawing one above (north) and the other below (south) of the microcomputer's main bus on the schematic of the microcomputer and have nothing to do with their functions (only the location they were usually drawn at on the schematics). The official names for these two support chips by function are Memory Controller Hub (MCH) and Input/Output Controller Hub (ICH) respectively.

Modern microprocessors, due to increasing ability to put larger amounts of circuitry on each chip, have been progressively incorporating the functions of these chips internally, making the chips themselves obsolete.

What are special purpose chips and electronic circuits that control the transfer of data instructions and information from a disk to and from a systems bus and other components in the computer?

This sounds like a disk controller and possibly an I/O port. A disk drive has to have a controller. The controller is connected to the system bus or the southbridge chip, and that is how it is connected to the rest of the system. The controller uses a driver to tell the operating system how to communicate with it.If you mean further back than that, then you may be referring to the chipset chips. There is a northbridge and a southbridge, and it is the southbridge that connects to the peripheral bus and to any disk controllers.

What is the definition of southbridge chipset?

The Southbridge, also known as an I/O Controller Hub (ICH) or a Platform Controller Hub (PCH) in Intel systems (AMD, VIA, SiS and others usually use 'southbridge'), is a chip that implements the "slower" capabilities of the motherboard in a northbridge/southbridge chipset computer architecture. The southbridge can usually be distinguished from the northbridge by not being directly connected to the CPU. Rather, the northbridge ties the southbridge to the CPU. Through the use of controller integrated channel circuitry, the northbridge can directly link signals from the I/O units to the CPU for data control and access.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southbridge_(computing)

What is the function of the south bridge chip?

The southbridge is a chip that connects thenorthbridge to other components inside the computer, including hard drives, network connections,USB and Firewire devices, the system clock, and standard PCI cards. The southbridge sends and receives data from the CPU through the northbridge chip, which is connected directly to the computer'sprocessor.
