Ox is an Old English word for any type of domestic cattle that are bred to work rather than for meat or milk. Such animals must be strong and have stamina, long endurance and patience.

In Egypt they were primarily used for pulling a plough; in medieval Europe oxen (the plural form) were used for drawing carts and wagons as well as providing plough teams.
