The Afro is a hairstyle popular among African Americans during the 1960's and 70's. During the Civil Rights Movement, there was a trend away from the traditional press and curl that had been popular throughout most of the century. African Americans of that period were trying to express their unique heritage in various ways, including exploring unique hairstyles. The Afro was achieved by using a long tined comb known as a pick to lift the hair from the scalp into a bouffant shape. Since the African American's hair is very curly and dry, the style prompted the development of new styling aids such as Afro Sheen, an oil based product which does not straighten the hair. Lighter products made possible the easy shaping of the hairstyle into the desired effect. Another style poplular to that era was the Jeri Curl. It was a relaxed style that did not involve the extremes of a straightening perm. The curls were reminiscent of the waves and curls of the 1800's in white women. Since it was a permanent solution it could be maintained by the same styling aids as the Afro, but was not as "poufy" as the Afro.
