Japan bombed Clark Airfield on 8/DEC/1941. The Bataan peninsula was taken when some 70,000 plus soldiers and Filipino's surrendered. The first Bataan began with horrific results. Stop and your were either bayoneted or beheaded. Corregidor island is in the mouth of Manila Bay. Whoever controlled Corregidor Island controlled Manila. Army Coastal Gunners kept ships away with pin point accuracy. 10,000 Navy, Army and Marines guarded the island. One ship that was left on station was The USS Canopus, (See Capt. Sackett's account). The men eventually scuttled the ship to keep it out of Japanese hands and the Canopus personnel transferred over to the 4th Marines. The brave men and women on the island faced daily bombings and attempted invasions. The Japanese were repeatedly beat back. Eventually starvation and low supplies forced Gen. Wainwright to surrender the island and the second death march took place. Eventually the men were POW's at Cabanatuan 1,2 and 3. The impressive and tenacious stand at Corregidor threw the Japanese timetable off and allowed the Allies to regroup in Austalia and the long Asiatic/Pacific Campaign began. If makes me irritated that this island, alone because all ships had been ordered away is overlooked in most historical documentaries. If anything it gets a passing word or two.
If it had not been for the Personnel on the Island and the Navy mustering over to the Marines the Philippines would have fallen five months earlier. The battle for Corregidor in 1941 needs some serious attention and accolades for what they did. The men that died there in the POW camps was because of brutality and inhuman treatment. The ones that survived faced years of physical and mental troubles. I for one would like to see an in depth look at that battle and it's consequences.
