The Coral Sea, with an area of about 4,791,000 square km, is located off the Northeast coast of Australia, bordered in the east by the Queensland coast and Papua New Guinea. It extends west as far as New Caledonia and the New Hebrides, north to the Solomon Islands, and south to the Tasman Sea which lies between Australia and New Zealand. The Great Barrier Reef is found in the Coral Sea. Essentially part of the Pacific Ocean, the Coral Sea is prime breeding ground for cyclones during the Southern Hemisphere cyclone season.
