Thomas Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence. He wrote it to sever ties with Great Britain. More importantly, it helped give the U.S. foreign aid from France and encouraged American patriots to fight for the cause of liberty.

However, technically, Thomas Jefferson was not the "writer" for the Declaration of Independence. He actually just wrote the first draft. The penman for the actual copy of Declaration of Independence was Timothy Matlack.
