Jefferson practiced law, served as a delegate to the Continental Congress , wrote the Declaration of Independence, served as Minister to France, Governor of Virginia , Secretary of State and Vice President before he was president. In his spare time, he ran his plantation and wrote some books.
John Hancock (1737-1793), orphaned as a boy, was adopted by a rich uncle who had no children of his own. Hancock is best remembered for his large, flamboyant signature on the Declaration of Independence.
Before his presidency, Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Jefferson was a fairly successful lawyer in the Virginia area. He was a delegate to the Second Continental Congress. He was the second Governor of Virginia after independence. He served as US Ambassador to France (1785-89). He was the first US Secretary of State (1790-1793). He served as the second Vice-President of the United States (1797-1801). Then he became the third President of the United States.
Oliver Wolcott died of old age in 1797. Oliver was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Governor of Connecticut.
