It is an Anglo saxon name first found in Somerset in 1268. There are various spelling variations such as Pennyman, Peniman or Penyman. The name may be also derived from their work as local treasurers or 'pennymasters' who were in charge of the local mint. Generally thought to be the name of a person who worked as a servant to the Penn family. Also found in North Yorkshire as William Pennyman died 1628 and whose son was High Sheriff in Yorkshire. Some of the Penman family moved to Ireland and in the 19th Century to Australia and New Zealand. Also, Ann Penman arrived in Quebec, Canada in 1820, There were Penman settlers in the USA in the 18th and 19th centuries.
