It was founded in 1348 by King Edward III and the number of knights is limited is limited to 25, though a few supernumary ('extra') members are allowed. The Order's motto is the famous 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' - 'Accursed be he who thinks ill of it'). The regalia are splendid and include a 30 ounce gold chain ... The order of British honours primarily includes several key categories: the Order of the Garter, the Order of the Thistle, the Order of St Michael and St George, the Order of the British Empire (OBE, MBE, CBE), and the Companion of Honour. Each order has its own criteria for membership and ranks, with the Order of the Garter being the highest. Honours are typically awarded for significant contributions to society, including public service, arts, and sciences. The honours are conferred by the monarch, usually during ceremonies such as the New Year or Birthday Honours Lists.

You should look at the word 'garter' not as a verb, but as a noun. The word 'garter' today is of course best known as 'article of women's underclothing'. A well-known put totally unproven story has it that the origin of the name of the order was an incident in which a lady's garter fell down by accident, and the king, picking it up told bystanders 'shame on you who think bad of this' (the Order's motto). There is however another meaning of the word that probably is more relevant here: garter was the name of the leathers straps that held together the pieces of a knight's armour. Although the proof of the name's origin disappeared when the earliest documents of the Order were destroyed in a fire, many scientists now believe that the order of the 'garter' meant to indicate that it bound together Britain's most important but loosely-connected nobles in the same way that a garter firmly held together the pieces of an armour.

This is the motto of The Order Of The Garter: "Honi soit qui mal y pense". The order was founded by Edward III, probably in 1348. Legend has it that that the King was dancing at court with the Countess of Salisbury when her garter fell from her leg. As the other courtiers sniggered, the King was said to have picked up her garter and proclaimed "Honi soit qui mal y pense" - Evil be to him who evil thinks.
The red-sided garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) belongs to the kingdom Animalia. This snake is a subspecies of the common garter snake and is part of the phylum Chordata, class Reptilia, and order Squamata. It is commonly found in North America, particularly in regions with moist habitats.
