The Shoshone were spread over a very large area and different parts of the tribe lived in different ways, depending on the climate and available resources found locally.Among the Western Shoshone (who were part of the Basin culture and generally had no horses), summer clothing for men was either absent completely (meaning they went naked) or was simply a breechclout of woven plant fibres, animal skin or fur. Women wore just a short apron of deerskin or woven fibres at the front, only occasionally adding another at the back. Women may also have worn a conical basket hat like those of the Paiute. Both sexes went barefoot for much of the year. The Northern and Eastern Shoshone were much influenced by Plains culture and were rich in horses. Again the breechclout was worn by men in summer while women seem to have worn a wrap-around deerskin skirt leaving the upper body uncovered. Moccasins were more widely worn by these groups. Men went bareheaded but the women often wore a kind of sun hat made of twined willow.See links below for images:
The Shoshone people moved frequently primarily in search of food, following seasonal migration patterns to access different resources. Their lifestyle was largely based on hunting, gathering, and fishing, which required them to relocate to various regions throughout the year. Additionally, environmental factors such as climate and resource availability influenced their movements, as well as the need to avoid conflicts with other tribes. This nomadic lifestyle allowed them to adapt to the diverse landscapes of the Great Basin and surrounding areas.

The Western Shoshone Indians traditionally inhabited the Great Basin region of the western United States, which includes parts of present-day Nevada, Utah, Idaho, and California. Their environment features a diverse landscape of mountains, deserts, and valleys, providing various resources for hunting, gathering, and fishing. The Shoshone adapted to the arid climate by utilizing seasonal migrations to access food sources, such as small game, plants, and fish from rivers and lakes. Their lifestyle was largely nomadic, reflecting the need to follow the availability of resources throughout the year.
