The Coral Sea, with an area of about 4,791,000 square km, is located off the Northeast coast of Australia, bordered in the east by the Queensland coast and Papua New Guinea. The islands forming the northern edge of the Coral Sea (the Solomon Islands, and Santa Cruz Islands) were the nearest captured areas to New Zealand. But Japan was actually stopped well south of those islands in the Coral Sea during the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942.
