David Kalakua, Kalākaua I, was the last reigning king of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, holding that position from 12 February 1874 until his death at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, California, on 20 January 1891.

He was born in Honolulu on November 12, 1836 to High Chief Caesar Kaluaiku Kapaʻakea (1815 - 1866) and the Chiefess Keohokalole.

Kapaakea was the son of Ali'i Kamanawa Opio II and Kamokuiki. He was a great grandson of one of the five Kona chiefs who supported Kamehameha the Great in his uprising against Kiwalao, Kame'eiamoku. Kapaakea's siblings (David's aunt and uncle) were the High Chief Joel Mahoe and the High Chiefess Kekahili.

David's mother, Analea or Annie Keohokālole (1816 - 1869) was a Hawaiian chiefess born at Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. She was daughter of the Chiefess Kamaeokalani and the High Chief Aikanaka. Through her father she was descendant of Kame'eiamoku and Keawe-a-Heulu two of the Kona chiefs that supported Kamehameha the Great. Her first marriage, to John Adams Kuakini, was childless.

The fact that Kapakea and Analea were cousins meant that their marriage was considered sacred in the Hawaiian culture.

David Kalakua's siblings included:

  • High Chief Moses
  • Prince William Pitt Leleiohoku (1854-1877)
  • Lili`uokalani (Lydia Kamaka'eha Paki, 1838-1917) - last reigning monarch of Hawaii
  • Princess Miriam Likelike (1851-1887)
  • Prince James Kaliokalani (1835-1852)
  • Princess Anna KaÊ»iulani (1842 - ?)

  • Princess KaiminaÊ»auao (1844-November 10, 1848)

  • High Chief Kinini

His wife was Queen Kapiolani, the granddaughter of King Kaumualii, the last king of Kauai before it was ceded to the unified Hawaiian Islands.
