Satan working through the Catholic church encouraged the torture and persecution of many faithful Christians especially those who refused to give up the keeping of the seventh day sabbath in favor of Sunday, refusing to bow to the Pope as having holy authority ,refusing to embrace idol worship etc. Many of these faithful Christians sang hymns as they where burned at the stake and tortured.
