When the US Constitution was first written in the late 18th century, slavery was still practiced in some of the states, and those states would never have agreed to become part of the United States if slavery had been abolished, so it would not have been feasible to proclaim in the constitution that all men are born free and equal, when clearly, some were born into slavery at that time period. And even without the issue of slavery, that was not really an age of great egalitarian sentiment. It was still widely believed that rich men were better than poor men, property owners were superior to those who merely rented, and that some ethnic groups were superior to others, and so forth. There were all sorts of inequalities that people believed in. Many of these beliefs linger to some extent even today, however, we do now have some appreciation of the value of granting equal dignity to all people.
