Warszawa or Warsaw is the capital of Poland.
It was:

  • founded in about 1300.
  • the capital of Mazovia from 1493
  • the capital of the Kingdom of Poland from 1385
  • the capital of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1569.

In 1768 the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth became a protectorate of the Russian Empire then the region was partitioned several times by the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Prussia, and the Habsburg Monarchy, and ceased to exist in 1795. Warsaw did not have a national capital status between 1768-1795.

Warsaw then became the capital of the second Polish Republic after independence in 1918.
It did not function as a capital for several years because of the occupation and massive destruction there during World War II.
