The purpose of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. was partly, I think, to say "thank you" to the servicemen and women and support personnel who took time out of their personal lives to dedicate themselves to service of the nation at risk of their health, welfare and, in many cases, very lives.

It is particularly dedicated, as you probably are aware, to those who gave their lives in so many capacities to fight against an enemy, to save friendly forces around them, to protect the lifestyle we enjoy in America (or so we believed at the time), and in so many cases, fearlessly and selflessly made the greatest sacrifice that is possible for their loved ones and countrymen.

The Wall is a "special" way to dedicate our memory of those we lost in service in Vietnam, and to "say" that we honor them and the thousands and thousands and thousands who have laid down their lives at home AND in faraway lands. I think, like a giant "headstone," it gives us some peace to somehow mark a place in their honor, a place where we can go to touch their etched names in the stone and grieve, and remember the laughter, the love, and the fellowship we lost when we let them go. A place where, at least, their names can "exist" for us forever. To remember the honor and the pride they have shown us, the dedication they have taught us.

The Wall has also come to serve as a place for veterans of the war to go to to remember things we don't want to think about all the time in our lives, but we don't want to forget. All the "things" that were these people in our lives. To laugh and cry for a while, and pay "homage" to the honor, the dedication, and the devotion that has been payed out for the welfare of us who remain behind, forever "wounded" by this tremendous loss to our society.
