Answer:Estates of the realm were divisions of society in France and England in the Middle Ages and in Early Modern Europe. The First and Second Estates were the clergy and the aristocracy and those two were sometimes interchanged in various systems. The Third Estate was everyone who did not belong to the first two, the common people.

The only sort of parliament under the old régime in France was the rarely-assembled États-Généraux, or Estates general. This had three houses, called États - Estates. They were elected from:

Premier État (First Estate) - the clergy; priests, Bishops and Abbotts.

Second État (Second Estate) - the nobility

Tiers État (Third Estate) - everybody else.

Each Estate had one vote, so the common people almost never got their own way.

Our modern phrase 'Third World' comes from the French 'Le Tiers Monde' - the vast majority of the world's population, who have no real share in running the world.
