In this writer's family history, my father had never found work before and had never had more than a few cents in his pocket. He received a WPA job planting trees along the Mississippi and earned $30 per month. He was given $5 for personal needs and they sent $25 home to his mother each month. She wrote to my father and told him that it was the most money she had ever held in her hand at one time. This was a godsend to a poor Missouri farm family.
