The Incas played a ball game called Tlachtli. This was a popular game played in nearly all the ancient Mesoamerican cultures.
The Incas enjoyed various forms of entertainment, including music, dance, and festivals. They played instruments like pan flutes and drums, often accompanying traditional dances that celebrated agricultural cycles and religious ceremonies. The Incas also organized games, such as the popular sport of Tlachtli, a type of ball game. Additionally, storytelling and oral traditions were vital for preserving their history and culture.
In addition to pok-ta-tok, the Mayans played several other sports, including a ball game known as "tlachtli," which was similar to pok-ta-tok but had different rules and equipment. They also participated in archery, which was both a sport and a means of hunting, and practiced various forms of wrestling. Additionally, the Mayans engaged in foot races and other physical contests that emphasized agility and strength. These activities were often tied to religious ceremonies and societal status.
They didn't play basketball, they played what today is called the Mesoamerican ball game which is similar. Mayans called it Pok-o-Tok and Aztecs would call it Tlachtli, but the game was exactly the same. There would be two groups of men, each team would have three turns to touch the ball and try to score a "basket" before passing it to the other team. It was only played with their shoulders, hips and thighs. They would play on a square court with 2 vertical walls where they would have the rings (what today is the basket). The loosing team would be sacrificed (the blood would be given to the gods). more info: http://www.ballgame.org/
The Mayan people danced, played music, played board games like Patolli ( a gambling board game) and they're favourite - pok-ol-pok. Pok-ol-pok was a ball game similar to our present game soccer. They had to kick a ball, [using anypart of your body, (but not your hands)] to get it through a ring. The winning team would get all the losers jewelry. Sometimes the losing team even died. The Mayan people made their instruments out of conch shells, wood, potery and deer antlers. They danced and played music to honnor their gods.
The correct spelling is "tlachtli". It is a Mesoamerican ball game played by indigenous peoples in ancient civilizations like the Aztecs.
