Trench warfare put in simple words is wholes in the ground that the army digs up, to avoid crossfire. Although it does prevent being shot it creates a stalemate, which means the battle doesn't gain any land until long periods of time. Trenches were created in World War 1 because at the time they invented the first machine gun that can shoot 9 yards of ammo. The Only way to prevent getting shot was the trenches at the time.
