Slaves from the South and freed men in the North played a significant role in the US Civil War. In the South, many slaves stayed at home to work the farmlands that they worked before the war. Then, the Confederate armies used slaves to help in non-combat duties such as carrying ammunition or cooking meals. Late in the War, some slaves were enlisted as soldiers to help fight the North. This was rare, however, and for the South it was too late to really help the war effort. For the Union, freed men, and slaves who fled to the free North had a significant military role. Some former slaves formed regiments and under Northern officers were used in offensive and defense. In other situations, such as in Louisiana, slaves were recruited by Northern officers to form fighting units. As an example, former Southern slaves fought in the sieges of Vicksburg.

The Confederates made military use of slaves in the US Civil War. On October 20, 1862, Confederate President Davis called for Virginia to furnish 4,500 slaves to work on the fortifications of Richmond. Since Blacks had little choice, they performed work in digging trenches and other fortifications around other Southern cities as well. In some cases, there were freed slaves living in the South. These men were paid approximately $11 per month for their labors.Far too late in the war, in early 1865, Davis authorized drafting 300,000 slaves into the army. The so-called arrangement with these soldiers was that they would receive their freedom if the South won their independence from the US.
