In the Union(North) they worked in factories. In the Confederate(south) they worked in plantations, Tobacco and Cotton. That's all i know.. the North had not only factories to work at but they had newspapers and small business to work at! and the south had plantations to work at but they didnt just grow tobacco and cotten.

Slaves from the South and freed men in the North played a significant role in the US Civil War. In the South, many slaves stayed at home to work the farmlands that they worked before the war. Then, the Confederate armies used slaves to help in non-combat duties such as carrying ammunition or cooking meals. Late in the War, some slaves were enlisted as soldiers to help fight the North. This was rare, however, and for the South it was too late to really help the war effort.For the Union, freed men, and slaves who fled to the free North had a significant military role. Some former slaves formed regiments and under Northern officers were used in offensive and defense. In other situations, such as in Louisiana, slaves were recruited by Northern officers to form fighting units. As an example, former Southern slaves fought in the sieges of Vicksburg.
