Since Blacks had little choice, they performed work in digging trenches and other fortifications around other Southern cities as well. In some cases, there were freed slaves living in the South. These men were paid approximately $11 per month for their labors.Far too late in the war, in early 1865, Davis authorized drafting 300,000 slaves into the army.
