James Monroe was the fifth President of the United States, from 1817 until 1825.

Monroe only nominated one justice to the US Supreme Court, Smith Thompson, who was Secretary of the Navy under Monroe from 1819-1823. Thompson campaigned for the Democratic-Republican Presidential nomination for the 1824 elections, but lost the party endorsement to future President Andrew Jackson.

After his defeat, Thompson reluctantly accepted a commission as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in September 1823. He ran for, and lost, the 1828 New York Gubernatorial race while actively serving on the bench. Afterward, he retired from politics and focused his attention on the Court until his death in 1843.

Although Thompson was a staunch supporter of John Marshall and participated in many unanimous decisions, his contribution to the judiciary was less than noteworthy.

Any subjective assessment of Justice Thompson's contributions should be documented with some facts. That would be fair.
