In the Early Middle Ages, the Slavs were tribal people, who organized their tribes into a number of tribal unions. They built up city states that were at odds with each other fairly constantly.

People called Varangarians, or Rus, for their red hair, traded among the people of Russia, and since they were trusted by the people of numbers of city states, represented a link among them. The people of Russia asked the Rus to form their governments, and the great nations started to form some of the greatest nations in Europe, with the Kievan Rus leading them. The Varangarians were called Vikings in the West.

In the thirteenth century, Tatars of the Golden Horde invaded and pillaged the area, putting it into a period of near anarchy for about three hundred years.
