You need to find your closest Al-anon or Al-ateen group in your area. They are free and will give you the guidance and support you need. They have "been there, done that." They have been very helpful to families in getting the help that they need. If your non-alcoholic parent is agreeable, they should get involved too. I hope that this helps. You will be in my prayers.

Also look for SMART and another worthwhile technique is MICBT both deal with addiction management.

Can a 17-year-old move out without getting into trouble if their mother is becoming an alcoholic?

Legally, no. A minor does not decide whether or not a parent is becoming an alcoholic or if the home environment is unsuitable. That is decided by the state's department of social services (DCFS, CPS, etc.).

How does an enabler affect a person addicted to alcohol?

Enablers keep the addiction moving in full force, by making excuses for the addict/alcoholic, cancelling plans or calling in work for them, helping them avoid taking responsibility for their current condiition. Theyll often make drug or booze runs for them, but sadly, they're not often aware of how much of a role this behavior plays in helping the alcoholic commit slow suicide.

How will an alcoholic act when he stops drinking?

Depends on what treatment option he/she uses. Alcoholics and addicts stuff their feelings for as long as the drink/drug. All these come out when the alcohol/drug stops. With the help of a support group such as AA/NA life can become a joyous, fullfilling experience. Without help it can become a living hell for the addict/alcoholic and everone around them.

Alcoholic dependent without being a acloholic?

Theoretically one could be psychologically dependent without being an alcoholic, but it is not a distinction made by experts. If you are unable to stop drinking without physical withdrawal symptons, you are addicted.
