The south somehow was able to save some of the ancient languages and later on there was a huge mixing. As aryans were powerful, and Sanskrit was a global language at that time (like English is today, only it was much better and difficult) it was later on called the mother of all languages. Though not all but most of the languages spoken today can be linked to sanskrit.
