The resolution of the Missile Crisis showed that neither the US nor the USSR wanted to go to war, but that both were determined not to easily back down. The heightened tensions lasted into the 1980's, and included the war in Vietnam and the invasion of Afghanistan. But never again did the two powers engage in open confrontation and brinkmanship.
