1862 was an important year in the US Civil War. Much attention is correctly given to the fall of the Confederate forts Henry and Donelson along with the bloody Battle of Shiloh. Additionally, the war in the Eastern Theater attracts attention as Union General George B. McClellan's Peninsula campaign was extremely important. With that said, the Battle of New Orleans is often overlooked. This was a joint Union army and navy operation that was a vital Union victory. The battle ended on April 28. 1862. The victory was of the utmost importance in that New Orleans was the largest Southern port and its location at the mouth of the Mississippi River was crucial. In addition to these factors, the City of New Orleans was a major urban center and its occupation by troops under General Benjamin Butler was the first such Union occupation of a major Southern city.
