There were multiple catalysts to the civil war. First there was a disagreement amongst the states over tariffs on imported goods from Europe. The South primarily paid these taxes and resented the fact that the income gathered from the tariffs were used on public works projects in the North. Secondly there was the issue of states rights. The South thought that the federal government should function like the U.N. settling disputes amongst the states while leaving the states to govern how they see fit. With the election of Lincoln the South feared that he would drastically change the role and power of the Federal Government, which he did. The South didn't agree that the Federal Government should be allowed to have that much power and decided to form their own nation.
