What might have caused the French people to embrace Napoleon as Emperor so soon after fighting a revolution to get rid of a King?

The simplest answer is a desire for stability. The Revolution had spawned waves of tremendous violence and political strife. Governments had come and gone, masses of people had been executed, parts of the country had risen up in revolt.

At the time, France was at war with virtually every country in Europe since it had executed its King. Napoleon was a famous military commander who the French looked to for victories and salvation. He also was seen to be above the political intrigue that had wracked the earlier republican regime.
