If you look at an atlas, many Mexican cities have distinctive names that end in '-pan', '-pec' or '-can' such as Tlalpan, Tlacopan, Atizapan, Culhuacan, Chapultepec, Oaxtepec. These cities are of Aztec origin and kept their names, even after their conquest by Spanish conquistadores in the 16th century.
