In November of 1620, 102 disillusioned English Pilgrims sailing on the Mayflower landed at Plymouth in Massachusetts. By the end of March, half of the pilgrims were dead, including their leader John Carver, tragic victims of a harsh first winter and starvation. Assisted by friendly Wampanoag Indians, the remaining colonists learned to fish and plant corn and hunt wild turkeys and deer, and offered their first Thanksgiving following the plentiful harvest season of 1621.
