All the native groups in the area that became Connecticut belonged to the Algonquian language family and all their languages were closely related.

In the north-east in 1700 were the Nipmuc, with the Pequot in the east and south-east (they had split from the Mohegan almost a hundred years earlier). The Mohegan occupied a large part of the eastern half of the area with the Quiripi occupying most of the western half. The Mahicans held the far north-west corner and the Munsee Delawares held a small area in the far south-west.

The name Connecticut is derived from the Natick language spoken in the eastern part of the state - it was originally qunni-utick-ut (at the long stream).
