Columbus landed in the New World in 1492, a few years before Vespucci, but because of bad word of mouth during this time, a cartographer, Martin Waldseemuller, mistakenly thought Vespucci had landed in the New World before Christopher Columbus after an account of Vespucci's 1497 expedition was published. Waldseemuller maned the continent America after him.
