German exploits in North Africa now seem to many historians a waste of time as far as Rommel's Afrika Korps. It's clear that the Germans bit off more than they could chew. In October of 1942, the British and Australians under General Montgomery sought to push the Afrika Korps out of El Alamein. There is now little doubt that the operation would be a success. The military edge went to the Allies in that their forces had the following advantages:* Montgomery had an advantage in tanks. Most records indicate it was a six to one advantage in tanks;
* Allied advantage in troops were three to one; and
* Air power for the Allies was unchallenged.
Montgomery's plan was to utterly defeat the Afrika Korps and drive it back to Tunisia.
