Lewis and Clark led the Corps of Discovery expedition from 1804 to 1806, mapping the newly acquired Louisiana Territory and establishing American presence in the region. Sacajawea, a Shoshone woman, served as a guide and interpreter, helping them navigate and communicate with various Native American tribes. Zebulon Pike explored parts of the southern Louisiana Territory, notably the area that would become Colorado, and provided valuable information about the geography and resources of the land. Together, their efforts contributed significantly to the understanding and exploration of the vast territory.
I saw Brian Lewis play many times for Pompey in the late 1960's, good player.
Thomas Jefferson had dreamed of exploring the West for at least 20 years before he even became President. In 1783 he had even asked William Clark's brother, George, to take on the challenge. The Louisiana Territory had been a land purchase transaction by the United States of America of 828,800 square miles of the French territory "Louisiane" in 1803. The U.S. paid 60 million francs ($11,250,000) plus cancellation of debts worth 18 million francs ($3,750,000), a total cost of $15,000,000 for the Louisiana Territory. After finally purchasing the Louisiana Territory, and two weeks before inauguration day Jefferson asked Lewis, in January of 1803, to go on the journey. Jefferson then requested $2500 from Congress to pay for the costs of the trip.

Sacajawea served as an interpreter and guide for the Lewis and Clark expedition, helping them communicate with various Native American tribes and navigate through unfamiliar territories. She also played a critical role in establishing peaceful relations with the tribes they encountered along the way.

Meriwether Lewis, and William Clark were sent by President Jefferson to explore the northwest and see if there was an all water route to the Pacific Ocean, and Sacajewea was the guide Lewis and Clark hired from a Mandan village to guide them through the mountains to the coast. 1. Lewis -(documented items, people and resources found along the trail) 2. Clark -(documented items, people and resources found along the trail) 3. Jefferson (purchased land from France) 4. Sacajewea - (guide)
From an early age, York was assigned to Clark as a body servant. Like most slave body servants, he was probably more often with Clark than with anyone else. Clark most likely brought York not only because it was York's assigned duty anyway, but also because he was an already trusted companion. There's no way of knowing how long York accompanied Clark during the years Clark spent in the army, but it was not unusual for body slaves to accompany their masters into military service.
- You could use details of Lewis and Clark crew being chased by a bear, spending a whole day trying to catch a prairie dog, and accidentally shooting at a woman on the first day of the journey. (Click link for details on that). You could also have an omnipresent "voice" representing Jefferson when they receive letters from him. It would actually be more effective if you have this intimidating voice, off stage, read out really fast all the instructions that Jefferson gave to Lewis and Clark (which is really long and in no way could Lewis and Clark manage to do everything on it and focus on surviving) and then Lewis and Clark just stare at each other and then at the instructions again onstage in amazement. Just some ideas for you. A lot of funny things happened on the trip, another instance is where Lewis was followed by a baby buffalo and had trouble getting it to stop following him, you could incorporate that as well.
Lewis and Clark Expedition (1803-06) In January of 1803, Jefferson requested $2500 from Congress to pay for the costs of the trip. Thomas Jefferson then commissioned Capt. Meriwether Lewis (his presidential aide) to explore the newly purchased Louisiana Territory. This territory is what is now the northwest United States. Before Lewis met up with Clark, he began the expedition on August 30, 1803 in Pittsburgh PA. Lt. William Clark would offer to join Lewis on the expedition weeks later on October 13, 1803 at Camp Dubois (in present-day Indiana). They then named their team the "Corps of Discovery." At the time, Lewis was 29 years old and Clark was 33. From there, they sailed down the Ohio River towards St. Louis. The party of nearly 30 --including Lewis and Clark, three sergeants, 22 enlisted men, volunteers, interpreters, and Clark's slave -- departed St. Louis in May 1804 heading up the Missouri River. They would spend their first winter at Fort Mandan at the present site of Bismarck, North Dakota. It took about 3 weeks to build Fort Mandan, which they named for the local natives, and they settled in on Nov. 27, 1804. There, they acquired a guide and translator, the Shoshone woman Sacagawea. In spring 1805, they continued to the headwaters of the Missouri River, struggled across the Continental Divide, and headed west along the Salmon, Snake, and Columbia rivers to the Pacific. They returned to St. Louis the following year.

They were Deists like many of the famous intellectuals of their day. They believed that God created the universe, but didn't play a role in its current affairs. The world was ruled by the laws of nature, a mentality that aided them during their long voyage. They were also very accepting of other faiths from the men in their party, to their native guides.
