Where can information on my grandfather's unit the 112th Infantry Regiment 28th Division be found?

A quick search on "112th Infantry Regiment" and "28th Division" brought up over 48,000 sites that tell something about the unit and the major battles they participated in, including WikiPedia. I'd start with a couple that show up on the first coule of search pages and get a good idea of specific area to focus in on and the time frames your grandfather was with the unit. And if your grandfather is no longer living, you may want to contact the National Archives and get a copy of his service record.

When was the North Russia Campaign?

The North Russian Expeditory Force or the North Russia Campaign was a plan by the British and American to send troops to northern Russia to prevent the Germans from using the Russian ports for shipping supplies. Due to the Revolution, Russia dropped out of the War. The USA and UK was concerned that Germany would use the Russian ports. The Americans sent the 339th Infantry Regiment, the 310th Engineer Battalion and 310th Medical Battalion and other support units from the 85th Infantry Division to Russia. They were placed under the command of the British and were armed with Russian rifles. Soon after they arrived in November or so, the Germans had surrendered. It was decided to keep the NREF there to give aid to the White Bolsheviks. They participated in several battles. They remained there until Summer of 1919. Another force of British was sent to far eastern Russia for the same reasons. On the return home, the American painted their helmets white with a blue square with a white polar bear and adopted the name "The Polar Bear Regiment". The 339th Infantry Regiment and the 310 Engineer and 310 Medical Battalions used the Polar Bear on their respective DUI pins. The Polar Bear Association is an organziation of Veterans of the 339th Infantry Regiment. The Polar Bears will be holding probably their last reunion on 7-11th Sept, 2008 at Gettysburg, PA.

What is an army regiment?

A Regiment is a term for an organization within the army. And the organization of the Army has changed over the years and for various countries.During WW2 the US Infantry Regiment consisted of 3 Battalions of 4 Companies each. There were 3 Regiments within an Infantry Division and including artillery, engineers and support personnel, the infantry division contained 15,000 men. The infantry battalion was the basic unit that operated in the field and was commanded by a Colonel. Regiments were numbered units. The division was identified by a Number and a cloth shoulder patch. In the Civil War, a regiment was about 1000 men, but most were smaller. After a few battles their size would be reduced to less than 400. The Regiments were the basic unit and were identified by a number and their state. Thus there were units such as 20th Maine Regiment or 54th New York Regiment or sometimes more elaborate names, such as Volunteer Regiment. Regiments were formed into a Brigade, which was the basic unit that fought in the field.

World War 2 involvement of Company K 7th Inf Reg third Division?

It would be difficult to provide a detailed history of Company K to include its troop movements, battles, casualties and such. The 3rd Infantry Divison served in Sicily and Italy, including time at Anzio Beach. After the fall of Rome in June 1944, they participated in the invasion of Southern France where they fought into Germany. There is a detailed history of the 3rd Infantry Regiment that was published soon after the war. Maybe you can obtain a copy through an inter-library loan. Or you can purchase it from the publisher; Nashville Press. "History of The Third Infantry Division in World War II" by Donald G. Taggart. Battery Press, 1945
