During the Spanish Civil War, German volunteers called the Condor Legion fought on the side of the Spanish fascists. The Condor Legion consisted of members of the German army (the Wehrmacht) and the German air force (the Luftwaffe). The participation of the German airman and their modern aircraft on the side of the Falangists was the deciding factor in the war. The Loyalist side didn't have a modern air force and the Condor Legion quickly established air superiority and readily exploited the huge advantage it gave them in ground battles.

The Condor Legion bombed the Spanish city of Guernica on April 26, 1937, this was the first time airplanes committed what would later be called "saturation bombing" of a civilian population (the Germans attempted to bomb British cities in WWI but they didn't have enough aircraft and WWI aircraft didn't have the bomb capacity to be more than a nuisance - the Germans had a bit more success with Zeppelin attacks but this was short lived - the British devised the incendiary bullet which made the Zeppelin's - filled with flammable hydrogen - death traps.) Guernica had neither defense again air attack nor shelters for the population. The attack became the focal point of Loyalist Propaganda, they claimed over 1,600 civilians were killed and that it showed the ruthless barbaric nature of their opposition. In truth, approximately 300 people were killed and both sides were guilty of atrocities, larger and smaller, throughout the war.

Probably the best known reference to this event is Pablo Picasso's painting "Guernica". At the time of the bombing, Picasso was already working on the painting which represented the impact of the war on the Spanish.

Small correction; the Wehrmacht was NOT the German army (although it's a common fallacy). The Wehrmacht was the unified armed forces: consisting of the Luftwaffe (air force), the Kriegsmarine (navy), the Heer (army) and the SS.
