The Iliad and the Odyssey cover two different time periods: The Iliad is about the siege of Troy during the Trojan War, and The Odyssey is the story of the soldiers journey home from Troy.
It is widely accepted that Troy fell in the 12th century, about 1184 BCE. The Odyssey and the Iliad were most likely written between 800 and 700 BCE. Herodotus writes that he believed Homer lived in the 9th or 8th century and therefore his writings were most likely recorded in the same time period.
It is very old. The oldest written works where we can learn about the Greek gods are from the 8th century BC: Theogoniaby Hesiodos and The Iliad and The Odyssey by Homer (whoever he was). Before those there were, of course, oral traditions going back a very long time.
Homer's audience was fascinated by tales of the Mycenaean era due to the rich blend of history, heroism, and mythology that characterized this period. The epic narratives, such as those found in the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey," showcased larger-than-life heroes, epic battles, and divine interventions, which resonated with the values and ideals of ancient Greek society. Additionally, the Mycenaean era represented a time of great cultural significance and legendary figures, allowing audiences to connect with their heritage and explore themes of honor, fate, and the human condition.

Homer was the author of The Odyssey and The Iliad; both The Iliad and The Odyssey gave insight into what the Greeks not only did (as in tactics in war, as in the case with The Iliad) but a look into how they saw the Olympian gods in action; Homer preserved the ideals of the Greeks in his writings. He did not necessarily shape the Greek spirit during his time, but he cleared some obscure customs and beliefs for future generations.

During the classical time period, new literary forms developed such as epic poetry (e.g. Homer's "Iliad" and "Odyssey"), drama (e.g. Greek tragedies and comedies), and philosophical dialogues (e.g. Plato's works). These forms helped shape the foundation of Western literature and continue to influence storytelling today.
The Odyssey is basically a continuation of the Iliad. It is post-Trojan-War. The Odyssey entails the state of Ithaca (the land where Odysseus rules) during the time after war, the chase of suitors after Penelope, Odysseus's long and treacherous journey home, and the events that occured after his arrival.ans hhahhhahahahhhahh this is the best story in world his=tThe Odyssey is about Odysseus

Homer did write the Iliad and the Odyssey. Some believe that he copied from other authors perspective on the Trojan war, but he wrote the two books for sure. He did not copy from other authors. -Mr. Hinrichs
