The Romans modelled their temple on Greek styles. The Roman architecture textbook by Vitruvius mentions in passing a Tuscan style and did not include it in its architectural canonic orders. Tuscan was the Latin for Etruscan. Renaissance architects Sebastiano Serlio and Andrea Palladio talked about a Tuscan order and described it as more robust and rustic and less ornate. However, the Romans rarely used the Tuscan order and it does not seem that this style was used for temples. Serlio said that this style was "suitable to fortified places, such as city gates, fortresses, castles, treasuries, or where artillery and ammunition are kept, prisons, seaports and other similar structures used in war." Palladio said that "the Tuscan, being rough, is rarely used above ground except in one-storey buildings like villa barns or in huge structures like Amphitheatres and the like which, having many orders, can take this one in place of the Doric, under the Ionic." The Tuscan order refers to type of columns that resembles a Greek Doric column, but is more slender, smooth (without the grooves of the Doric column) and without ornaments.
