microprocessor
Both hybrid integrated circuits and monolithic integrated circuits were used in third generation computers. These integrated circuits contained from 4 to 100 transistors per integrated circuit. The image above shows hybrid integrated circuits of the type used in the IBM System 360 line of computers.
four generations are over and the fifth is on the way ......First Generation (1940-1956) Vacuum TubesSecond Generation (1956-1963) TransistorsThird Generation (1964-1971) Integrated CircuitsFourth Generation (1971-Present) MicroprocessorsFifth Generation (Present and Beyond) Artificial Intelligence

in the olden days they used computers to type and do math problems and that's it!!!! that's why today we are glad to have such advanced computers

Third Generation Computers were made out of Integrated Circuits and Fourth Generation Computers are made of Microprocessors.
well, second generation is current generation right now (summer, 2009) second generation has built in speakers, and it's much skinnier, but it is also a bit more expensive, but i'd say its worth it. (i have one)
Go to youtube and type in how to jail break me for a second generatiion ipod!

The word "generation" as used with respect to computers refers to the type of electronic components used to make computers of the specified generation. One common ordering of the computer generations is as follows:first generation, 1942 to 1958 - vacuum tubessecond generation 1957 to 1967 - discrete transistors (usually germanium transistors)third generation - 1964 to present time - integrated circuits (usually silicon monolithic integrated circuits, but some were hybrid integrated circuits)fourth generation - 1971 to present time - microprocessor integrated circuitsfifth generation - there is lots of debate on the definition of this (and possible following) generation as well as when (or even if) it began
Pictures of the five generations of computers are not as easy to find as one might think. The best way to find them is to use a search engine and type in "(first, second…one at a time) generation of computers." Though some of the ad pictures at the bottom of the page might be offensive to some, the best pictures found for the first generation are at the Related Link. The second generation brought us computers very much like the PCs we have today, and from that point, the main progress was made with internal changes, though other changes, like LCD monitors, laptops, cell phones, etc. came about, too. Pictures of each generation can be found on websites linked at the Related Links.

2nd generation on an iPod means that it is the 2nd time around they made that type of iPod Touch, and is usually better than its predecessor (the 1st generation iPod).
