What type of government did the colonist want?

Prior to the troubles with Britain, the average colonist considered themselves British citizens, and due to the lax style of governing the British had employed, were used to a certain amount of self-governance. After the war, they wanted a government that lacked the power to become autocratic, and would consider its foremost goal, the protection of the people's rights. They wanted equal representation in Congress, and the guarantees established in the Bill of Rights.

The prohibitions it contains describe actions of King George III and his henchmen. They would arrest legislators for things spoken on the floor of Colonial assemblies. When the war had ended, it was too late to return to the way things were before King George iii took the throne.

Basically, they wanted a government able to protect them from foreign invasion and internal wars. They wanted a government able to solve differences. Otherwise, they wanted the government to leave them alone.

Americans did not trust their government but believed it was necessary.
