Upon arrival in the U.S., immigrants typically took low-wage jobs in industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, and service sectors. Many found work in factories, as laborers, or in domestic service roles. Others sought employment in mining or construction, often in physically demanding positions. These jobs were often characterized by long hours and challenging conditions, reflecting the immigrants' need for immediate income and stability.

Politcal machines are organizations that sway votes or control a city's gov't. For example, Tammany Hall was a political machine in New York City. The leader was Boss Tweed. Boss Tweed would pressure peopel into voting a certain way, in favor of what he wanted and who he could have control over. Immigrants typically supported them because the political machines would do them favors and try to find them jobs. They did this because they wanted to keep a good image, even though they were really just corrupt politicians.

Illegal immigrants can have any job, but most illegal immigrants have very little education so they tend to go for low income or harsh jobs. Some common jobs are in the Construction, Dairy, Mechanic, Fast food, Farming, Gardening, Janitor, and more. Jobs that most Americans won't do (although they claim they will, but few do) will usually be occupied by illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants with a high education (Bachelors, Associates... etc) will have a hard time finding a job without papers, so they usually have to do jobs way below their educational level.

History records that for the most part, immigrants during the early part of the 20th century and in periods earlier, took blue collar jobs. The fields most open to them were in factories and construction. They also were "junk collectors" and house painters. I can say that as my family came to the USA in 1906 and those were the types of jobs they held. This was the case with most immigrants.
