The Confederate state of Arkansas was important throughout the US Civil War because of its location on the Mississippi River. Although skirmishes between the North and South were an ongoing drama, it was in the northwestern section of the state that saw significant battle action. There in the battles of Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove, the North was victorious and kept control of that section of the state early in the war.
