Ashurnasirpal was best known for the removal of the primary Assyrian Government from the city of Ashur, where it had been established since Assyrians origin a thousand years earlier. He found a new capital further north by the Tigris river about twenty-five miles south of Mosul, at the ancient city of Kalhu which later became known as the new capital of Nimrud. Ashurnasirpal's early campaigns all used either eastern or western operational bases even though his capital of ahur was much further south. The needs of his empire demanded a northern capital. He had many storage cities and administrative centers where he could start from scratch and build his city. He laid his eyes on an old city, which had fallen into ruins. He started the construction of the palace, gave it magnificent buildings with sewage systems, and provided the capital with water from a canal that came from upper Zab. Ashurnasirpal palace was built and completed in 879 BC where he launched a weeklong feast recorded in an inscription found in the palace. His palace in Kalhu now is modern day Iraq.
