Ben Franklin was a man known for many skills as a writer, scientist, and politician.

1. He wrote for his brother's paper, The New England Courant, under the name Silence Dogood. These letters by Franklin were filled with advice and opinions on global issues. They were very popular with readers. James, Benjamin Franklin's brother, did not find out about the letters until Benjamin confessed to him. Later, Benjamin Franklin bought the Pennsylvania Gazette and turned it into the most popular newspaper in the colonies. His newspaper included the famous "Join or Die" political cartoon with a severed snake. This cartoon was used to stress the importance of colonial unity. Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanack was also very popular. It was published annually and included Franklin's aphorisms, such as "A penny saved is a penny earned."

2. Franklin was also an inventor. He invented the Franklin stove, swim fins, and bifocals. He also studied electricity; his famous kite experiment demonstrated electricity/lightning.

3. Franklin was also a part of the Second Continental Congress, working in the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence. After working on the Declaration, Franklin went to France as a U.S. ambassador, which helped smoothen American relationships with France and led to the alliance with France during the American Revolutionary War.
