In 1993 the Speaker of the House of Commons - the much appreciated Betty Boothroyd - answered orally in the House of Commons a complaint by MP Tony Benn that a court was apparently about to defy the Bill of Rights in a case brought by Lord Rees-Mogg. (Commons Hansard Column 351, 21st July 1993, at 3.30 pm, publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm199293/cmhansrd/1993-07-21/Debate-1.html). In her answer she uttered these significant words:
"There has of course been no amendment of the Bill of Rights"
