George Washington was a surveyor who documented most of the land in Western New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Also, he was a commissioned officer in the British Royal Army (Colonel) and conducted battles against native Americans and the French during the French and Indian War. Upon becoming the highest ranking officer in the newly formed American army, Washington was soundly defeated by the British on many occasions and until the Christmas raid on the Hessian installation looked to be a sure loser in the revolution. After the revolution, Washington insisted on keeping a close relationship with France for military and financial reasons and this position ultimately led to his appointment as President.
