Hannibal was actually the first general to actually scare the piss out of the great Roman Empire. He was a Carthigian general who had an immense hate of Rome. After Carthage approved his plans to invade Rome, he stopped at nothing. He brought war elephants, siege engines; pretty much whatever he could use to destroy Rome. Of course, hatred clouded his judgement and his armies fell through to Rome's military discipline and organization. Shortly after, the last of the Carthigian empire fell, and Carthage itself was sacked.
